our resident wine expert on the perfect Wines for the easter period
If you have been to one of our baby friendly wine tastings, you will already know Amanda, Founder of Social Sip Club. As well as our events, Amanda has been running workshops and classes to help people get the most from wine since 2013 and Social Sip Club comes from wanting to share wine knowledge without all the faff and pretence that is usually associated with it.
Each month Amanda is going to be bringing us the latest wines and drinks she is loving.
This month, the kids have barely gone back to school after half term, and already Easter seems to be upon us. Take the hassle out of choosing wine for Easter weekend with our handy wine guide!
EASTER brunch & bubbles
My favourite Easter meal! The only real option here is bubbles. Champagne or a ‘traditional method’ fizz such as a French Cremant are delicious with eggs benedict or scrambled eggs and smoked salmon. This South African Cap Classique is made in the same way as Champagne, with the same grapes (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) and it’s deliciously fresh but with complex flavours. Ideal with brunch.
Widely available but on offer at Sainsbury’s at £12 (usually £13.75)
roast lamb & red wine
Classic pairings include cabernet sauvignon and merlot (Bordeaux, basically) but I love a Rioja Reserva here. Lots of rich fruit goes so well with the sweetness of the lamb. If you prefer something lighter, plump for a Pinot Noir – the lightness will bring a spring twist. Beronia Reserva is one I reach for regularly, as it’s well priced, especially if you can find it on offer, but really reliably delicious!
Widely available c.£16
fresh asparagus & WHITE WINE
It’s always a good idea to pair wines from the area where the food comes from – think Sauvignon Blanc and goat’s cheese. And asparagus is no different. The UK season is short and Easter is early this year, but for those lucky enough to find some, stick to the British answer to Sauvignon Blance – Bacchus. This one from Chapel Down is crisp and citrusy and great with tender asparagus.
CHOCOLATE EGGS & SPARKLING ROSE
A Rosé Prosecco is better than Champagne with your chocolate eggs, but if you fancy something different, try a Sparkling Red. A Bird in the Hand Sparkling Pinot Noir has a red fruit sweetness that will go perfectly with your Easter eggs or an easter pud.
Widely available but on offer at Sainsbury’s at £12 (usually £15.75)
